What are Birthstones and what do they symbolise?
Birthstones are gemstones that represent your birth month - with one for each month of the year.
Birthstones have long been believed to be a symbol of good luck and health and birthstone jewellery makes an ideal birthday gift.
The type of birthstone for each month can vary depending on country or continent, but below are the stones we use for each month and their meaning:
January - Garnet
Although this stone can be found in many different colours, red garnets are the most well known. This gemstone is believed to represent loyalty and grace.
February - Amethyst
A beautiful stone that can be found in green and purple variants. Amethysts are believed to provide protection and peace.
March - Aquamarine
As the name suggests, this blue gemstone evokes thoughts of the sea. Aquamarines are believed to represent good health and beauty.
April - Diamond / Clear Quartz
This sparkling clear gemstone's precious quality is believed to represent innocence and love.
May - Emerald
Their rich green colour makes emeralds instantly recognisable. They are believed to represent love and happiness.
June - Pearl
Pearls stand apart from other gemstones due to how they are made - by a living creature! They are believed to represent purity and joy.
July - Ruby
This vibrant red gemstone's fiery tones are incredibly eye-catching. Rubies are believed to signify passion and beauty.
August - Peridot
An unusual vibrant shade of green, Peridots are thought to offer protection and peace.
September - Sapphire
Although most recognisable as a blue stone, sapphires also come in pink and clear tones. This elegant gem is believed to be a symbol of loyalty and wisdom.
October - Opal
This unique gemstone contains a multitude of colours that become clearer as you move the stone around in different light. Opals are believed to symbolise truth and strength.
November - Citrine
Citrine can be found in vibrant orange-yellow and light yellow shades and is thought to offer strength and friendship.
