GOLD FILL JEWELLERY - WHAT IS IT?

Gold filled chain necklace

At A Box For My Treasure our gold jewellery is made exclusively with the material known as gold fill (previously known as rolled gold). We get lots of questions about this material, so here's a round up of the most common ones and our answers:

1. What is gold filled metal?

Well, to put it simply, gold fill is when a thick layer of gold is bonded with heat and pressure to a layer of base metal (often brass). Gold fill does not flake off due to the bonding process and must contain 5% gold to qualify to be called gold fill.

2. Is gold fill jewellery tarnish resistant?

Gold fill jewellery is tarnish resistant and won't discolour with continued wear.

3. Is gold fill jewellery waterproof?

Wearing gold fill jewellery in the shower or sea won't cause any damage, but it's best to avoid wearing it in chlorinated water. It's also best to apply creams and perfumes before putting on your jewellery.

4. Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, the gold fill material we use contains no nickel or known allergens.

5. How long will gold fill jewellery last?

Gold fill jewellery can last up to 30 years.
